Most people are ambivalent about, not resistant to, change. Motivational interviewing has been shown to make patients more likely to change their behaviour, so we encourage you to try these techniques in your next consultation.
Taking a collaborative approach with patients makes them feel in control of changes, and allows them to set achievable goals. It can be hard to fit motivational interviewing into a standard consultation, so if you don’t have time to work through a series of steps and set goals with a patient, you can still use simple lifestyle counselling techniques to encourage change. Here are some useful resources.
